From 2012-2017 I worked at the Ryan Family YMCA.
It was often an awful job. I had to be there at 4:30 am to serve people who were usually mad about the smallest details and wanted to blame me (a lowly lifeguard struggling to make ends meet). I usually was up late the night before working on assignments and low on sleep. But if Robert was there, I knew it was gonna be a great morning.
Most of our guests had a bone to pick with LIFE, which naturally meant they had a bone to pick with me. I would estimate 80% of our guests were over 65. There were only two kinds of elderly guests: Sweet or bitter. The bitter ones were everywhere. Life was not good enough, the pool wasn't good enough, and nothing could measure up to their impossible standards. It was as when they hit 65 they acted like the world owed them something. Nothing was more nauseating than being surrounded by those kinds of people.
Somehow Robert defied the odds. He was not bitter in the slightest. Even in his advanced age he showed up at the pool with a lot to give. He was filled with love and joy. Truly fruits of the spirit.
Robert was, and I don't say this lightly, my absolute favorite part of working that job. He came in with a jolly spirit and always took time to talk to us. He told jokes, stories, and asked all about our lives. There was no one on the morning lifeguard staff who didn't know and absolutely LOVE Robert. We usually teased him and he took all our nonsense like a great sport. The last time I saw Robert was the summer of 2017, he brought his grandkids to swim at the now-defunct Southwest Y and I tell ya, there was no one in that pool having more fun than Robert. He was splashing around, goofing off, and laughing with his grandkids. Over the years we learned a lot about each other, and when I left the Y to serve the Lord in Japan. Robert would reach out via email and ask how I was doing. There is not ONE time in those 5 years that I didn't see a man who was filled to brim with the joy of the Lord. I have never met anyone more genuinely joyful, and I have spent my ENTIRE life in church. I'm a 4th generation pastor now and I still hope I can learn to love people like he did. He truly embodied the love of Christ in the way that he spoke to people.
If I am blessed to live another day I hope it is filled with the measure of kindness he offered to us every morning.
Even now, I still think of his kindness and I miss him.

Blessings, peace and comfort to you Reva Jean, David, Charles and your families. As I think of Bob, he is the most humble man of God I have ever known. I rejoice that our lives crossed. He was friend, counselor and comforter to my life.
May the Lord bless you all with grace and strength in the days to come.

We’ve had a long and delightful relationship with Bob and Reva Jean. During their stay in Paducah, Frances’ father, W.O. Jones, JR, was on the building committee for the remodeling of the church while her Mother, Altha, was choir director for many years. On December 22, 1963, Bob married Frances and me in the home of her parents in Paducah. Reva Jean sang The Lord’s Prayer. We are thankful that we were in Paducah the last time they were there and we got to have a wonderful visit with them.
Reva Jean, our thoughts and prayers are with you,the boys, and their families.

Reva and Sons: When God allowed me to become youth director at First Baptist Church in Paducah, I had no idea that one of the world's most wonderful families would move into my heart. As Jackie and I courted, David and Charles waited with me for her arrival in front of the church one sultry summer evening. As I learned to clumsily lead a youth group, Reva Jean encouraged me and asked me to dinner with the family more times than I can count. Most of all, I learned how to be a pastor from Bob. His loving guidance and his patient acceptance of me, in spite of all of my lack of experience and practical sense, was one of the most significant factors in my spiritual formation. I grieve with you that Bob is no longer with us, but I already anticipate that magnificent reunion that will take place one day when we arrive in heaven, where Bob will be awaiting our arrival. Reva, David and Charles, you are being remembered today, and our love will always accompany you. --David and Jackie

As a student at SWBTS and member at Gambrell Street Baptist Church in the 1980s, Bob was instrumental in my development as a pastor. Through his leadership and example as associate pastor, his leadership as my field supervisor through SWBTS, and his life-long friendship with myself and my wife Angela, I'm am thankful for Bob and Reva Jean's influence in our lives.

Dear Reva Jean, David and Charles and family,
I believe Mother was on the pastor search that brought you and other beloved Brother Bob to Paducah, beginning a loving relationship with the Jones family that has lasted more than 50 years. Both of you ministered to Trish and me on the biggest day of our lives; we celebrated our 47th anniversary on March 13, and always remember your contributions to making our ceremony so memorable. With you and Brother Bob and Mother and Daddy as Christian examples, our marriage couldn't fail. We can just see Brother Bob being welcomed to Heaven by Mother and Daddy and the hundreds of other friends who were drawn closer to Christ by this powerful servant. We love you all and are praying for you as you walk through The Valley of the Shadow of Death. Our loving God is with you every step of the way! That was the promise Brother Bob preached so eloquently. In Him, Roy A. and Trish Jones

We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Brother Bob. He was such a special man in the lives of so many while ya'll lived in Paducah TX. It meant so much to David and I that he came back to Paducah to perform our wedding ceremony in 1979. May God bless your family during this difficult time.

Bob became a friend immediately when I began my first pastorate, at Flomot, Texas. I had just graduated from Seminary and had not yet been ordained. Bob immediately offered to help organize an ordaining council and plan the ordination service.
When Bob and Reva Jean married a couple of years later, she also became a dear friend and an inspiration to us. Their travels provided a pattern for us, and many treasured memories. Now their sons and their families are also wonderful reflections of their loving lives and ministry.
How blessed we have been to be included in their circle of friends!

My dearest brother, Dr. Robert J. Beck, D.Min, became my "big brother" at age 3 when I was born.
He has been the guidance for me, as we acquired our education at Iowa Park Schools, then on to college at North Texas State College (UNT), and he progressed to raise his family, and I did the same to mine, as did our brothers, Don and Max. Forever in my heart, Bob. Our Lord gave you highest of mentoring talents and leadership. You are with our Jesus now. Until we greet you again. Lovingly, your sister, Nell
