I’m thinking of Mark and the many talents and virtues he brought to this life. I was a coworker and then briefly his manager when he was at Baylor Grapevine. I always appreciated his humor, depth, commitment, and wisdom,

I am saddened to hear of the illness Mark suffered through and of his death. Mark and I were peers.
We worked as Chaplains at different St. David’s hospitals in Austin and I considered him a trusted friend. A “peer” in the world of professional chaplaincy is true gift because we often are lone rangers in the facilities where we work. I was the only chaplain and having Mark to talk through our work was something I valued greatly. Mark supported me in so many ways: coming to hear a new band start up I was lead singer for and supporting me on my ordination committee.
We are very close in age and which effects my heart that much more. He left us too soon. I am finally reading his books… I told him for years I was going to buy them… They are even more valuable to me as I read I hear his voice. God, bless his family with peace in knowing how many lives Mark has touched in his short years on earth. He served you well and his humble manner would attest my words. But he did. He loved greatly. I feel the absence of his presence. Rev. Emma Jane Conley, BCC

I worked with Mark for many years at St. David's. I will forever be grateful for the support he provided to nursing staff in the most difficult situations. His outlook on life and calming nature were always the things I appreciated most. He most certainly made our hospital a better place. He always said the right thing at the right time and knew how to provide comfort. He was a very special person and I consider myself lucky to have met him.

I met Mark when we were both in the chaplain residency program at Baylor University Medical Center and was blessed by the years he served as a chaplain in our system. Mark's authenticity, easy smile and laughter helped to build community and brought healing to many. He is deeply missed

Mark might not have been perfect -- who among us are?? -- but he was an amazingly spiritual man, and I consider what I learned from him to be foundational to who I am as a chaplain. I will always be grateful to God for granting me the privilege of crossing paths with Mark. He will be missed always.

Mark was such an important part of my success as a hospital and then hospice chaplain in Austin, TX. Mark loved all the students he taught and sustained them long after they were no longer in his January Pastoral care class.
He gave me my first job as a chaplain, at South Austin Medical Center (St. David's) and helped support me through a very difficult chaplain clinical residency years later at Seton.
Mark taught me how to be a sacred Chaplain and come alongside patients and family as a listener, hand-holder, and always with an open heart. Mark taught me to slow down no matter what the emergency so I could be present no matter what I faced at my job.
He had this trick he passed on where you put your hands in your pants pockets on the way to an emergency as this would ground you and help you stay calm and walk calmly. I bought only work pants with pockets so I could do his trick.
He loved to laugh deeply and did not care for superficial conversations. He wrote a poetry book and his life as a spiritual advisor and Chaplain was poetry in motion.
He strived to live his values of love, comfort, and non-judgment when he was a chaplain and his knowledge of what a chaplain should be and do affected my whole life and my work as a chaplain.
I'm so glad my Mom got to meet him and he took time to share lunch with us. I'm so proud that I worked for and learned from him. I'm so grateful to have known him and will miss his laughter in this world. I know that his love will continue because of the thousands of patients and their families he touched during his life.
I loved him and l will not forget him.
Every time we talked, he would end the conversation with two words, saying,”Be well.”
And so I send to him, “Be well, my dear mentor, free of pain, your soul flying high across the veil lifted by all those you touched.”
I send love as well to his family and all those who loved him.

My half joking reference to Mark was that he was a double Y chromosome chaplain. That spirit of adventure and fearlessness was so inspiring to me. I will forever remember him with great love and gratitude for the way he restarted the chaplaincy program at what is now BSWH Grapevine and for his dedication to the patients, medical staff and physicians. He used all of his considerable array of skills and his great big heart of compassion to support people going through the most difficult times imaginable. Thank God for you, Mark and much peace and comfort to your family and friends.

Mark's passing brings me great sadness though it's been a while since we talked. Mark was one of the funniest people I'd ever met. Mark was also a thinker and a searcher. The world needed both his laugher and his wisdom. He was indeed a traveler, always on a journey. He will be missed. Peace to Mark's family.
