I first met Andy in 1984 when I went to play for him. I was considering whether to continue the pursuit of a career in music. Andy was a tremendous encourager to me and one of the very best teachers I’ve ever had. He helped me to become a much better musician than I would have been otherwise. I have always considered him a mentor, a colleague, and above all a friend. My life was made richer for having had the opportunity to know Andy and to interact and work with him. I will miss him greatly. Thank you for everything Andy.

Andy, you taught Nick so much more than how to play the clarinet. You taught him how to golf, how to drink scotch, how to smoke a cigar, and how to just relax and enjoy the music. You helped him become the amazing man he is today. Thank you for being part of our world.

I miss not seeing him play with his jazz group on first Fridays at the Modern. He was such a good musician! It was a joy to listen to him & his group.
With love, Judy Norman

I have such fond memories of being a colleague of Andy (and Jan too) in the late 1980s-early '90s. Andy was such a great artist, so very talented, kind, and supportive. I loved learning about their lives as they raised their (at the time) young children, Gina and Matt. Andy often had me in stitches (she's bustin' my balls!) and the memories he shared about his time growing up sitting in the kitchen peeling garlic non-stop with his Italian mother. What a wonderful guy! Andy was a real gem and I know he will be missed by many. May all the memories of happy days comfort you all in this time of sadness.

My mother loved hearing Andy play so much that Toby hired him to play at a surprise 70th birthday party for my mom, Elsie Lard, on April 29, 1987. My mother was so touched hearing ANDY play that she cried tears of happiness.

Despite the demands of The Forth Worth Symphony, and his roster of students at TCU, Andy was kind enough to make time for me as a student.
Lessons on the schedule for an hour often lasted far beyond that.
Andy was a much needed mentor in my playing career, and this was one of his many ways of showing me that he believed in me. I will always admire him and his teachings.
Jan, my heart goes out to you and your family.

I have had the good fortune of studying with many great clarinetists. Andy was by far the most influential pedagogue in my entire career. He explained how and why you should do something. To this day, I credit the success I have with my students to the techniques he taught me. I send my deepest sympathies to Jan and family. Andy was a truly great musician and teacher. His legacy will live on!

I first met Andy back in 1979 when I was a clarinet student and music major at the University of North Texas. The second I heard the first note coming out of his clarinet, I knew I had found the sound I had been drawn so much to from hours of listening to the recordings of the great symphony orchestras. Andy and his incredible gift for teaching are the reason I enjoy what comes out of my clarinet playing. His teaching and methods also crossover to other aspects of my professional life in dentistry where I have also been able to excel at a high level. The most important thing about Andy and his mentorship was the close friendship we developed over the many years. We shared a lot of the same ideas in politics and life in general. At times he provided the wisdom only a father could provide to a son. We enjoyed great cigars and cognac, clarinet talk, political debate, great food and just hanging out. He was the light of the gathering, always energetic and full of passion about everything we shared in common. Although he will be greatly missed, he will always be an important part of my life.

I met Andy in my time working at D'Addario, the clarinet reed manufacturer. He was an endorsing artist on our roster and I was his rep. We bonded instantly at our shared love of the early American school of clarinet playing, double lip embouchure, wonderful vintage mouthpieces with close facings, and our shared favorite clarinet artist, Harold Wright. In addition to being a remarkable clarinetist with an exquisite tone, he was just the sweetest guy in the world.
We would speak on the phone for hours and he would send me wonderful vintage recordings on burned CDs. I visited him at his house a few times where we tried equipment, played duets, and went out for lunch.
I will miss him terribly, and I regret that I didn't make it down to Fort Worth to visit him one last time. Rest in peace, friend.

Andy was pure light and joy. I can’t truly capture his energy with the proper words.
He was always so kind and humble. One thing that always struck me was that he was incredibly down to earth and never had acted superior to anyone.
I consider myself lucky to have known him. This is such a loss. I’m sad and grateful to have known him.
My love to Jan and her family.
