In the late 80s we would go on caving trips in the Guadalupe Mountains in New Mexico. Well, sometimes caving, but also a lot of walking around in the heat looking for caves. Near the end of one such hike someone said something about the abundance of flowers. I scoffed with the fake bravado of an ignorant young man. John said simply, "I like flowers." I reconsidered my position going forward. My home is in Colorado now. When I go for a hike, it's not the highest peaks I seek. I want to see something along the way. I like flowers. Thanks, John, for the inspiration!

I have many happy memories living across the street from John on Cordone. After we moved, John and I still visited each other's houses and met for Saturday movie matinees. We were once kicked out of a theatre for making too much noise. We remained friends through Mclean Middle School, Paschal High School and beyond. We didn't see each other much as adults but we stayed in touch. It's tough losing a childhood friend. Kurt Schuster
