Obituary of Betty Harpole Hyman

Betty Harpole Hyman of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 24th 2021, surrounded by her loving family. She was 82 years old. Betty was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister. She was also the wife of the late General Arthur S. Hyman. Betty is survived by her sister, Ethelyn Lee Harpole Welles of Madison, WI; daughters, Norma Sullivan of Boston, MA and Lee Ann Johnson of San Antonio, TX; sons, Eric Hyman and wife, Pauline, of Fort Worth, TX, and Jonathan Hyman and wife, Jo, of Southlake, TX; in addition to nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Betty grew up in a military family and went on to marry a career officer. The life of an Army wife took her on many adventures and taught her how to maintain a consistent family life during multiple international relocations. This likely cultivated her love of travel. She was fortunate enough to spend time in Germany, the Philippines, Costa Rica and Australia, to name a few. After high school, Betty attended Stephens College in Missouri and UTSA, in Texas, where she ultimately earned her degree. She began working for Southwestern Bell in 1981, and later for Lucent Technologies until she retired in 2000. Retirement gave Betty the opportunity to pursue her other passions: gardening /Master Gardner program, singing in the Alamo Chapter of the Sweet Adelines Woman’s Chorus, and playing tennis. She enjoyed volunteering at a variety of non profit organizations, including ELF Louise and Special Olympics. Being an avid, competitive and highly ranked tennis player for the majority of her life, it’s no surprise Betty instituted and participated in The Special Olympics Tennis Program.
