Obituary of Malcolm Douglas Arnoult

Malcolm Douglas Arnoult passed away at a local hospital on November 16, 2013, following a short illness. He was born in New Orleans, LA, on February 15, 1923, the son of Albert E. and Phoebe Voss Arnoult. He received a B.A. in Psychology from Tulane University in 1943. Following graduation he served in the United States Army 101st Infantry in the European Theater during World War II, for which he was awarded a Bronze Star. After the war he received a M.A. in Psychology from Tulane University in 1948 and a PhD in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1951. He worked as a Research Psychologist and Branch Head at the United States Air Force Personnel and Training Research Center from 1950 to 1957. After holding teaching positions at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Mississippi, he joined the faculty at Texas Christian University in 1959. While at TCU he helped develop the university's doctoral program in Experimental Psychology, and served as Psychology Department chair from 1966 to 1971. He retired as Emeritus Professor from TCU in 1990. Dr. Arnoult was the author of Fundamentals of Scientific Method in Psychology (1972) and numerous articles published in professional journals. He served as the president of the Southwestern Psychological Association from 1966 to 1967 and as the president of the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology from 1969 to 1970. Among his other research projects, Dr. Arnoult completed critical work on visual perception for NASA's manned space flight program. Dr. Arnoult was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Billye Keith Arnoult. He is survived by his son, Douglas E. Arnoult of Ft. Worth; his daughter, Sharon Arnoult and her husband, William Branch, of Austin; a brother, Everett Arnoult of Green Valley, AZ; two sisters, Irene Arnoult Rathe of Covington, LA and Marie Louise Arnoult Spangenberg of Metairie, LA; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the medical staff of Harris Hospital for their excellent and compassionate care, especially the nurses. A Remembrance of Life service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, Dec. 14, in the chapel of Trinity Terrace, 1600 Texas St., Ft. Worth.
